If you take the ace and cross to hand and then lead a spade to the jack North may rise with the queen and switch to another suit. Now you will never make your jack. The solution is to play low on the first round and then, if north continues you will finesse him for the queen. If he switches, you can lead spades from your hand yourself and again finesse him for the queen.
