Quiz 5 Question 2- Transfers

You open 1NT and partner bids 2 (transfer to spades), you obediently bid 2♠ and he surprises you by bidding 3♣ - what do you say now?

  • ♦ KJ65
  • ♣ 76
You are happy with spades as trumps, and partner has demanded that we play in game so we go straight to 4S to suggest shutting up shop. Don't be tempted by 3NT - our red suits may look secure but if partner has a singleton in either suit we are in for a rough time

3NT. Whilst we have a 4-4 fit in clubs we are loaded in the red suits where partner will be short (since he is 5-4 in the blacks) so now is the time to hold back as it's a misfit

4C. We are happy to support partner's second suit (indeed a slam may be on if partner has a little more than he has promised) but since 3C is forcing to game there is no need to rush to 5 clubs. 4C allows partner to do a cue bid or use blackwood if he is strong, or simply go to 5 clubs or 4S if he wants to stop in game

3S We have a tremendous hand with good spades and a tasty club holding. Again, since we are forced to game we have no need to bid 4S straight away that would show a weak hand (see problem 1). We mark time with 3S knowing partner must bid on, to game or slam if he has a good hand.
