Quiz7 Defending Against Take out doubles

Partner opens 1♠ and the next hand doubles, what do you bid with the following hands

3♠
A perfect hand to stretch the bidding. Without the double we would have bid 2♠. After the double we make life hard for the opposition by “bidding one more”.

Redouble
Our side have the majority of the points and we don't have a fit with partner's first suit. So tell partner we are interested in penalising the opposition by doubling anything they try to run to.

4♠
With five card support and a void this is the time to go straight to game. This has a twofold purpose; 1. to prevent the opposition from having an easy ride to finding their fit. 2. Getting across to partner the type of hand we have(weak & shapely), so that should the opponents bid on he will be better placed to know what to do.

2NT
A conventional bid showing at least a good raise to 3♠ with 4 card support.

Pass
With few points and no support for partner's suit we don't need to dredge up a bid. Don't be tempted to bid 2♣ to “rescue” partner, this bid is forcing and all that will probably happen is that partner will bid 2♠!
