What do we do here?
b)Duck the first diamond, win the 2nd and then draw trumps
c)Win the first diamond and play a heart to the queen
d)Duck the first two diamonds and then take the heart finesse by playing low to the queen
The Answer
Answer c)
This is a delicate contract and we could easily lose two diamonds; one club and one spade. If we touch trumps first then this is what will surely happen. Let's look at our losers, we should do this from the point of view of the hand with the longest trump holding i.e. dummy. The losers are 1 spade; 2 hearts; 2 diamonds; 1club – 6 losers! We need good things to happen. We need the ♥K to be with North. So play a heart to the queen; cash the ♥A throwing a diamond from hand ruff a heart and then play a diamond. The defence will win and should play ♠A and another spade(best defence). We win the second spade in dummy and play our last diamond which we ruff. So we make 4 spades; 2 hearts and a heart ruff; 1 diamond and a diamond ruff and 1 club. A hard earned ten tricks.
