Pass
4♠ may or may not make, we are not sure. 5♣ is unlikely to succeed as partner is only promising 3 card support and a few points. The best course is to pass and hope we can defeat 4♠.

  • ♥ 7
  • ♦ K6
  • ♣ QJ8743
5♣
Partner's singleton spade(at most), our singleton heart and good diamond holding and at least nine clubs between us means that this combination should play well in clubs and we may well make the contract.

  • ♠ 876
  • ♥ KJ5
  • ♦ 5
  • ♣ AKJ854
5♣
We have a very good club holding and a good holding in both red suits. Even the spades are no problem if partner only has a singleton (not unlikely). We have high hopes that 5♣ will make and should bid it with confidence.

Double
With a poor club suit and an excellent spade suit we are not confident that 5♣ will make but are sure that 4♠ will not make. We should therefore “take the money” by doubling the opposition.
